RICHARD GARET
The Spacious Now and the Scale of the Instantaneous

November 9 - December 16, 2012

Studio10 is pleased to present an exhibition of eight works by Richard Garet. Garet is an American artist based in NYC and originally born in Montevideo, Uruguay. The exhibition of digital media includes sound art, an audiovisual installation, and moving image works. These works exist as distilled representations of philosophical ideas explored through Garet’s investigation of the perception of time, media, and the cultural landscape.
The title of this exhibition, “The Spacious Now and the Scale of the Instantaneous,” rests on the subject of time and perception as two of the most prominent and consistent elements in Garet’s investigative practice. In addition, content such as background noise, media noise and its phenomenology that filters into aesthetics and the social and cultural landscape is present.

Garet positions scale and space as significant phenomena in the composition of works comprising the exhibition. Garet’s immersive environments prompt an opportunity for sensorial results in the viewer. Each work deals directly with repetition, duration and indeterminacy. Whether conceptual in origin or stemming from an investigation of complex systems his reductive process draws attention to the normative function of noise and environment, not only by a process of objectifying the ordinary but also by emphasizing the multilayered complexities of the mundane. Subsequently Garet’s work follows the background noise model but draws it up from a marginal status to an active presence. He finds further inspiration from material interactions that incorporate problems of context, technology, defunctionalization, commodity, and environment. Garet’s intellectually rigorous process of translating data and media, into sound and light recontextualizes and defunctionalizes them to create alternative compositions and possibilities that are equivalent to an abstract brush stroke or a single poetic gesture.

Recent exhibitions and performances include EAC: Espacio de Arte Contemporáneo, Montevideo, Uruguay; Fine Arts Museum of Montreal; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA), Barcelona, Spain; Art Museum of Puerto Rico, San Juan, Puerto Rico; and el Museo del Barrio, NYC.
